Hi, Janelle, love to hear from you!

1. If you are sick or if you have an accident, public hospitals will treat you, "no questions asked", and you may just pay some "symbolic" amount. To have a doctor's appointment (non urgent things), the public system is slower, but it works. Never be afraid, in Europe, to call an ambulance or to go to the hospital.

1a. With the residency card and after you have registered in the National Health Service, you can ask for an European Health Card, that enables all health issues to be treated anywhere in Europe (except in the UK and Switzerland, I guess...) in the same "cost" conditions that you have in PT. The different countries take care of the bureaucracy among themselves. (Hope it's never needed! - Mind this: If you don't have the card, you are treated for emergencies as well.)

2. Hair care stuff: To trim = aparar (and you show how long you want it).

(And I had to stop listening. I have to go. I'll continue as soon as I can. Can't wait!)

Relational society vs. transactional really does describe the people and the culture of Portugal. I'm still in awe over the kindness and genuine generosity of the Portuguese people. And Doug's comment also sums it up well! Thank you for being such wonderful hosts in your wonderful new home! I can't stop smiling thinking about Portugal! xo
