I've read Linda Holden's comment on winding roads and I can't resist telling the joke we (PT) tell when roads are winding (many, many, many are). (Mind, it is and old joke, so stereotypes are a must.) - There were some workers building a road. The road engineers were all english and didn't speak any portuguese (what else is new...), and the PT worker's supervisor (who didn't speak english) went to see the engineers and asked (in portuguese) which way should the road go now, That way?, This way?, while showing the options with his arm (we do a lot of gestures when we speak - so much, that you almost understand what we are talking about without understanding a word of PT...). The engineers didn't understand, so the supervisor repeated it all with more emphasis. The engineers didn't want to show that they were clueless about what was being asked, and just answered: «Yes, yes, yes.» Then the supervisor nodded, turned to the workers and said: «Pessoal, façam mais três S!!!» («DGuys, do another three S!»). Now I must explain that we say «estrada aos S» (S or "ésses", the name of the letter S) for roads that are in an S shape, so... full of curves and countercurves... See? It was the english engineer's fault!
